Party in the Park (Poem)

Collaborative Poem from the Poetry Workshop facilitated by Kate Evans on 24/06/07, Peasholm Park

There's poetry in this park
from the lone runner in the silence of the morning,
footsteps quick, then slowing;
from the frogs calling across the water,
their bugle eyes blinking through the moss.
There's poetry in this park
from the squirrels cramping
the swaying trees.

There's memories in this park
- tears softening the laughter -
rainbow lights twinkling in the wave of the dark night sky,
the luscious lake
as liquid as a velvet gown.
A wonderland with many Alices
who now remember
their childhood in this park.

There's lions in this park,
golden and scarlet,
parading with the geese,
their drums beating through my heart.
There's dragons in this park,
ripe red, apple green, yolk yellow,
floating past their prehistoric brothers.

There's unexpected magic in this park
in the sloping orange rooves,
in the heavy water falling,
in the willows whispering,
in the firework fountains.

There's peace in this park
when the weather is kind
and the sun glistens
across the water.

There's celebration
in the music
the colours
the people
the dance.

Yes, today, there's celebration
in this park.
